Custom Foot Orthotics An 'orthotic' is a device designed to restore your natural foot function and support. And, because your foot is the foundation for the rest of your body it can have far reaching effects. Just as a crooked foundation under a house causes all kinds of problems throughout the house. Unfortunately, poor foot and ankle mechannics are frequently overlooked and are the missing link to many repetitive injuries. Many complaints such as flat feet, heel pain, knee pain and lower back pain are the result of poor foot structure and support. Orthotics re-align the foot and ankle bones to their optimal position, thereby restoring natural foot function. In turn this helps alleviate problems in other parts of the body by alleviating undo stress that should be absorbed by the "normal " healthy foot. Some orthotics are very rigid and inflexible. However, Dr. Marzo uses flexible cushioned orthotics by Foot Levelers, often called spinal-pelvic stabilizers, because he has determined they are more comfortable and perform better. How? He wears them everyday and all day; in the office, exercising you name it. Many of our patients comment that they are so much more comfortable than orhtotics they have had in the past. Who needs orthotics? How do I know if I need orthotics? A few simple signs to see if you should have your feet scanned: uneven shoe wear; standing or walking on the edge of your shoes; one foot points out too much; are you knock-kneed or bow-legged; adults that experience an increase in shoe size (collapsed arch); increased shoe size after pregnancy (collapsed arch); uneven hip, shoulder or ear height when looking in the mirror; in general people that are on there feet for more than 4 hours a day at work or participate regularly in sports should be scanned. Patient Comments: "I had back pain. It was painful to compete in sports and then even while resting it would be painful. With the orthotics and Dr. Marzo's care I have no more back pain. I now go to Ithaca College. It's on a mountain and my dorm is at the top and my classes are at the bottom - I would not be able to do the trek 3-5 times a day without wearing my orthotics!"- Siobhan C. "I have arthritis in my back and knees. It would hurt to walk or to get out of a chair. House work I could only do for short periods at a time and shopping was only for a short time and then I would have to stop. I tried over the counter orthotics which did not help. Using the orthotics from Dr. Marzo I have less pain in my knees and back. I am able to walk farther with less pain and stand for longer periods of time without pain."-Mary G. "I had pain in my legs, feet and back. My feet arches were in constant pain. It interferred with my job, my mobility - just everyday functioning. Now with the stabilizers I am able to stand for long periods of time and am mostly pain free!" - June W. "I had low back pain and tired legs. I tried medication and store bought inserts. My exercise was spordic. I couldn't stay on my feet for long enough periods. Now after the orthotics I have consistantly improved my exercise schedule. I can walk longer and farther and as a rule the legs and back no longer bother me." -Rodger P. |
